Sequels don’t always get the balance right. It struggles to balance its commentary on the rapidly changing digital media landscape with the familiar spark of Miranda-Andy banter. The pace can sometimes feel uneven, especially when it combines newsroom crisis with insight, and its most pointed observations about the magazines business are often presented too thinly to fully connect with those who don’t understand the nuances. Still, there’s a quiet, lingering intelligence to the film that persists even when it’s not dazzling. And Miranda? He hasn’t lost his edge. She’s just learned to wield it in a world where there’s no longer any guarantee she’ll be the sharpest blade in the room.

The film shows how important it is for old-time journalists to improve and adapt to the times. The storytelling in The Devil Wears Prada 2 isn’t boring, and the fashion never slows down. For me this is more than a fashionable comeback. A love letter to magazine journalism and a serious plea – please don’t let it die!

For those looking for more, there is still plenty to visit, including spectacular Milan. If Streep’s blazer-adorned shoulders shrug at a new insult and her whispered insults still draw blood, Blunt remains comically tart in her portrayal of the always striving Emily. More of Blunt, and less of unimportant men – whether Andy’s ridiculously attractive boyfriend or Miranda’s saintly supporter husband (Kenneth Branagh) – would have done wonders for The Devil Wears Prada 2. As Miranda would say, and still does – if you listen carefully – “That’s it.”

Like the sequel, Meryl Streep’s Miranda has lost some of her purpose. Emily Blunt and Stanley Tucci are a fantastic reminder of not only why the first film worked, but also why continuity and experience matter.

The film is full of cameos, but Lady Gaga steals the spotlight. Simone Ashley adds a fresh edge, as Miranda’s new Emily, tasked with keeping her boss in check, nudging him toward political correctness, and helping him navigate the new age of cancel culture and body positivity. In a world full of Emily in Paris and people like her, The Devil Wears Prada remains the OG. It’s not turquoise or lapis — it’s cerulean, and it leaves women with a long-lasting thought: You don’t need anyone; you are enough.
