Happy Patel- Dangerous Detective sometimes happens so fast that you fail to connect the dots. The mayhem in an already dense plot culminates in a cleverly executed finale that is likely to be received with polarized emotions. It’s a coming together of many things, especially nostalgia. Vir Das’s film is basically the story of another guest in a bar where already Badshah, Judai, Johnny English and Tees Maar Khan are having a ball and drinking beer. They all talk about the most useless things in the most idiotic way. The surrounding crowd looks stunned. Some laugh, some despise. But at least they know they had a good time.

The film has no real plot, but it hardly needs to. Its eccentric characters and absurd situations turn the narrative into a tightly packed laugh riot that keeps the audience engaged from beginning to end.

The harsh and brutal words presented in the form of music and lyrics are an insult to our ears, but do a great job of preventing drowsiness for the audience. The director (Vir Das again with Kavi Shastri) relies on everything except an intelligently hilarious script. This blah black comedy creates disasters like Bangistan, Santa Banta Pvt. Ltd., and other products like it look nutritious in comparison. Do I really need to waste more space? A star!

Happy Patel: Khatranak Jasoos is a really funny film based on the fearless humor of Vir Das. It falters towards the end but still provides enough laughs to forgive the chaos.

The film freely uses the kind of language people reserve for close friends, never bothering to soften its tone. Much of the humor comes from Happy’s complete lack of awareness of the social mistakes he keeps making, and that ignorance becomes a walking joke. Vir Das, who is the film’s co-director and co-writer, remains firmly in control of the chaos he creates. The film will remind the audience of comedy films like ‘Aka Professor’ and ‘Sankat City’ directed by the late Pankaj Advani, although it seems to be even more carefree. ‘Happy Patel: Khatranak Jasoos’ demands patience and an open mind from its viewers. It may not work for everyone, but it deserves credit for daring to try something new in a place where playing safe has become the norm.
