Yes, eighty is an important watch. Ultimately, films like Assi’s matter not because they depict brutality, but because they force us to confront the everyday silences that surround it. The struggle of the victim and the frustration of a woman lawyer becomes a mirror to a society that still hesitates to listen, believe and act. Assi deliberately broke away from star-driven promotion by positioning itself as a writer-first film. And needless to say, both Anubhav and Gaurav Solanki deserve mention for their sensitive portrayal of a female survivor, a female lawyer and a female judge as well as a compassionate husband and a bereaved widower, colored with both empathy and strength.

You may end up debating the film’s craft, its choices, even its tone. What is hard to debate is the reality it points to. Because somewhere, every twenty minutes, another story begins or ends.

Overall, even when it falters in the latter half, Assi remains honest in its intentions, and its eyes remain firmly fixed on the survivor rather than the spectacle around her. This is not a cozy film, nor is it intended to be one. It wants to provoke, to keep the wound open long enough for the viewer to sit with discomfort. Assi may not always find the most subtle way to get her point across, but her heart is in the right place, and in today’s climate, that urgency still matters.

Assi is an important film. It forces you to think and brings to light a serious issue in society. It has its own merits and demerits too. The story is strong, but the writing and presentation become weak at some places. Among the demonstrations, Kani Kusruti is at the forefront. The film isn’t perfect, but its subject matter is important. It may not completely satisfy, but it definitely makes you think.

Taapsee Pannu’s Assi is inspired by intention, solid performances and confident direction. Although the film falters in the second half, it still remains a relatable and thought-provoking watch. The film stays with you long after the credits roll.
