Although the arguments in the court become very technical at places, overall the courtroom drama is quite entertaining. The first half is crisp but the same cannot be said about the post-interval portion which is both long and boring at times. Overall, The Taj Story is a thought-provoking film and also entertaining in parts. It will do average business mainly in big centres.

It started off well, but the second half in particular was completely disastrous and inconclusive due to its three-hour run time, erratic writing and flawed execution. Sadly, there is not a single wow moment in the film! It’s just a wasted opportunity.

Paresh Rawal, as always, gives a serious performance, but still he can’t save this disjointed mess. He’s surrounded by cardboard characters, clumsy dialogue and a script that’s trying to be a history lesson, a courtroom drama and a social commentary all at the same time, and failing spectacularly at each.

In the end, The Taj Story is certainly designed to arouse curiosity – and perhaps even challenge long-held beliefs. But the line between raising questions and pushing an agenda gets blurred. The film may appeal strongly to audiences already attuned to its perspective, but others may find the storytelling somewhat pretentious and the central conflict lacking historical basis. Still, as cinema, it succeeds in starting conversations – even if not everyone agrees with what it’s trying to do.

At 165 minutes, The Taj Story moves forward without providing any real answers to the questions it raises. Instead, it merely fudges the case by mixing fact and fiction to serve an agenda far removed from historical investigation.

The strong claims being made in The Taj Story would have achieved its stated goal had the film been better written, better presented and better edited. It’s not like that. As a result, it falls far short of being passively entertaining or truly thought-provoking. Verdict: The Taj story is a dice throw all over the place. Even Paresh Rawal can’t save it.

If you want to watch an entertaining film that still educates and does so without taking a narrow or propagandistic viewpoint, The Taj Story is really your piece of history. It examines something that is shrouded in unnecessary veils and asks pointed questions in a relevant manner.

Ultimately, ‘The Taj Story’ is a moderate watch that plays safely within a familiar framework. It raises provocative questions but stops short of exploring them with subtlety or restraint. What’s left is a film that wants to be bold but ends up being predictable – a story that starts with curiosity and ends with fatigue. Ultimately, it neither shakes your beliefs nor stirs your emotions, leaving you detached from its intent. With sharper writing and tighter direction, this could have been a thought-provoking film.
