The historic thriller of 2024 marked the beginning of Aamir Khan’s son, Junaid Khan’s debut, which Siddharth described “like a son”.
Filmmaker Siddharth P. Malhotra has credited Aditya Chopra’s unbreakable emotional support as the backbone behind the construction and release of his period drama Maharaj. In a clear conversation, Malhotra faced intensive personal and commercial challenges that he faced, an unexpected release strategy, and Deep Bond that he shared with Debut actor Junaid Khan.
The director recalled how Chopra’s mentorship and hearty encouragement continued him, especially during the indefinite days of Kovid -19 epidemic. Siddharth said, “There were moments when I was disappointed, especially during Kovid’s two years,” Siddharth said. “But your family keeps running you – my parents, my wife, my children, even my dog Simba. Junaid is like a son for me. We bowed to each other.”
Malhotra shared a deep personal moment, which renewed his faith in the film: “When Aditya Chopra, my Guru, when I produced the film, because of which I saw it, he sent a letter to me, in which it was said, ‘I am proud of you.’ This was my first real reward.

He said, “Netflix was also in love with the film. So, I knew that we have something strong. I am grateful that it finally reached the people – and for those who have not seen it yet, I say: Please see it.”
Despite the positive reception, Maharaj had a bumpy propaganda journey. Siddharth revealed that the film’s launch was not intention. He said, “We had a full-fledged 21-22-day promotional strategy. But none of this happened-no interview, Aamir sir, Netflix or YRF did not push any media,” he accepted. “It was not a planned step. It did not just go the way we had imagined. It was heartbreaking.”
Nevertheless, he stood firmly behind the team’s decisions. “We believed in the film. This faith never happened.”
While reflecting his struggles, Siddharth admitted the toll that delays and controversies took his morale. “You sometimes lose hope. But then your family, friends, and the team held your hand and reminded you why you started. I clung to him.”

The historic thriller of 2024 marked the beginning of Aamir Khan’s son, Junaid Khan’s debut, which Siddharth described “like a son”. The film also stars Jaideep Ahlawat, Shalini Pandey and Sharvari. Against the backdrop of the 1862 Landmark Maharaj Complaint Case, the story is based on Saurabh Shah’s novel and delays subjects of justice, reform and courage.
Continued on Netflix on 21 June, Maharaj made headlines for both his quiet release between his subject and controversies. Nevertheless, through all this, Siddharth P. Malhotra credited those who believed in them.
“Sometimes, this is not a reward or number,” they reflected. “These are quiet words from those whom you respect. This is with you.”
