Vibhu Puri and Pradhan Jha have written a story that belongs to a different era. The story runs on two tracks. Furthermore, the main characters have backstories and hence there is ample scope for drama. Overall, Gustakh Ishq is a well-made film with beautiful performances from the lead actors, but its box-office prospects are weak as it doesn’t have much to offer to the masses. It’s like poetry on celluloid.

The problem with Vibhu Puri’s Gustak Ishq is not just that it feels too dated for its mid-90s setting – it could have been one of those classic Muslim social films of the 60s and 70s – and not just that it’s talky – this is the kind of film whose dialogues are meant to attract wows – but that it struggles to make you feel. The music is great, the cast charms you, and both need better movies.
