This film is a must watch – bold, power-packed, entertaining, emotionally charged… a gripping drama that hits hard… #EmraanHashmi, #YamiGautamdhar, and director #Suparnavarma do career best work!

It started off well, but the second half in particular was completely disastrous and inconclusive due to its three-hour run time, erratic writing and flawed execution. Sadly, there is not a single wow moment in the film! It’s just a wasted opportunity.

Ultimately, Suparn Verma handles an extremely sensitive subject with rare restraint and grace, and Yami Gautam and Emraan Hashmi rise to the occasion with two of their most classy performances to date. Haq is a steady, courageous film that doesn’t beg for your sympathy; It earns your respect. It also reminds you that standing up for your dignity is indeed your right.

See Haq for its story, nuances and performances. Narrative depth is one of its strongest features and it refuses to oversimplify or collapse a complex debate into a convenient hero-villain binary. Here, all parties are treated very humanely, including Shazia and Abbas’s dynamic with the other women. Haq is quietly provocative and thrives on conversation, and that’s what makes him a winner. With an epiphany-like effect, the film ends with Shazia whispering ‘Iqra’, thus silently giving the fanatic world a lesson to read and learn before starting a war.

‘Haq’ does what it sets out to do with obvious empathy, giving us an ordinary woman who found extraordinary strength and resilience to fight for her cause and make history without even realizing it.

Rights lie in the real world. Through its middle parts, it mainly highlights the fights between Abbas Khan’s two wives for his attention, the continued growth of Shazia’s plight and the actions and sarcasm of a mean, meddling neighbor who, in an early sequence, encourages Abbas to rein in his feisty wife, but he is firmly dissuaded.

In the end, Haq works more as a conversation starter than a flawless film. Its heart is in the right place, and powerful performances carry it forward even when the storytelling falters. Suparn’s intention to revive a historical debate on women’s rights deserves appreciation.

Hopefully, Haq will start some discussions about how societal attitudes can be changed when women are making progress in so many ways – the Indian women’s cricket team will win the World Cup the same week the film releases. This should be seen as a call for gender justice, and not as a criticism of minorities.
